The world's elite and amateur athletes celebrate a triathlon festival, including the World Championship, in the Hanseatic city.
10 July, 2025

With around 8,500 participants in the Open Races, the individual race of the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS), and the Mixed Relay World Championships, the event is one of the most important triathlon events in the world.
The traditional competition in the heart of the Hanseatic city has been attracting tens of thousands of fans to the course for years – for two days, pure triathlon euphoria reigns around the Binnenalster, Reesendamm, and Rathausmarkt. The individual races of the WTCS on Saturday promise world-class performances and important points in the fight for the world championship title. The big highlight follows on Sunday: the Mixed Relay World Championships, where the world's best national teams compete in a relay format. After winning the world championship titles in 2023 and 2024 and Olympic gold in Paris in 2024, the German team is aiming to win gold in Hamburg for the third time in a row.
This is also emphasized by Andy Grote, Hamburg's Senator for the Interior and Sport: "In over 20 years, the Hamburg Triathlon, with its mix of elite and amateur races and tens of thousands of fans lining the downtown course, has become the world's largest triathlon and a flagship event for the sport. It shows what the Olympic Games in Hamburg could look like – after all, the mixed team relay was also made Olympic-ready here. Now we're keeping our fingers crossed for our relay team to win its third World Championship gold in a row.“
Prof. Dr. Martin Engelhardt, President of the German Triathlon Union (DTU), adds: ”The SUZUKI World Triathlon Hamburg presented by HAMBURG WASSER stands like no other competition for the combination of international top-class sport, enthusiastic grassroots sport and a city that lives and breathes triathlon – with the Mixed Relay World Championships as the emotional highlight of the weekend. We naturally hope that the German quartet will win the title again."
Enthusiasm at all levels
In addition to the world's elite, Hamburg expects more than 8,500 amateur athletes to take part in the open races over sprint or short distances and in relays. Together with the more than 3,350 schoolchildren who took part in the Suzuki Kids Triathlon a few weeks ago, around 12,000 people will take the opportunity to experience a triathlon in Hamburg. The start and finish are located in the city center on the Binnenalster and Rathausmarkt, respectively. The atmosphere is unique.
Daniel Schnell confirms this: “We are delighted to be the title sponsor of the Hamburg Triathlon again this year,” says the Deputy Managing Director of Suzuki Deutschland GmbH. "The Suzuki World Triathlon Hamburg is not only the largest triathlon in the world, but also a real highlight in the international sporting calendar. We look forward to experiencing an unforgettable weekend of sport together with the athletes and visitors."
Sustainability as an integral part
In 2025, the event will once again be all about sustainability. As in 2023 and 2024, this year's event has been awarded the Gold Sustainability Certificate by the World Triathlon Corporation.
“We are delighted to receive this award. It shows that high-performance sport and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand – especially at a major event of this magnitude. We didn't want 2023 to be a one-off, but rather a best-practice example that would encourage other organizers to strive for sustainable processes in event implementation,” explains DTU President Engelhardt.
Dr. Michael Beckereit, spokesman for the management of HAMBURG WASSER, emphasizes: “As the city's water utility, we are committed to not only supplying the Hamburg Triathlon with clean drinking water, but also to supporting it with a consistently sustainable infrastructure concept. With our investments in wastewater infrastructure, we ensure the water quality that makes swimming in the Alster possible in the first place.”
