As of 2009, the World Champions are no longer selected in a single event - but through a points system during eight events throughout the season. New standards will be set in triathlon sports with very attractive venues in the centre of the world’s most famous cities, a guaranteed world wide TV presence and prize money for the whole series total US$ 2 million.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the race in Hamburg on 5/6 September 2020 will be the first race within the 2020 ITU World Triathlon Series.
The elite races of the HAMBURG WASSER World Triathlon will take place under controlled conditions in the Stadtpark in the Hamburg district of Winterhude, instead of Hamburg's city centre as in previous years. An impressive field of both male and female elite athletes will take the stage on Saturday afternoon, September 5th, for the elite races of the ITU World Triathlon Series, over a sprint distance, The Mixed Relay World Championships will start early afternoon of Sunday, September 6th, with 22 teams aiming for the World title (detailed schedule can be found under this link) .
The event will be the first race in the World Triathlon calendar since the pandemic, and will see the world’s top elite triathletes lining up in Hamburg, including reigning World Champions, Katie Zaferes (USA) and Vicent Luis (FRA), as well as double-Olympic medalist, Jonathan Brownlee (GBR) and World Champions such as Mario Mola (ESP), Flora Duffy (BER) and Vicky Holland (GBR). Laura Lindemann and Jonas Schomburg will be leading a strong German team on their return to competition.
Aiming for the 2020 Mixed Relay World Championships crown, 22 teams will be toeing the start line in Stadtpark on Sunday. Current title holder, France will be looking towards a third consecutive victory, but the field will see strong teams such as USA, Great Britain and Germany among the ones to be fighting for the podium.
The public broadcasters will report on Saturday with a recap of the men's elite race and live from the women’s elite race (17:30 - 19:05 on ARD) and on Sunday live from the Mixed Relay World Championships (14:00 - 15:00 on ZDF). There will also be a livestream at triathlonlive.tv.
