SUZUKI World Triathlon Hamburg powered by HAMBURG WASSER once again honoured with gold sustainability certificate

The World Triathlon Federation World Triathlon has recognised the efforts of the German Triathlon Union (DTU) to make the SUZUKI World Triathlon Hamburg powered by HAMBURG WASSER sustainable.

As in the previous year, this year's edition of the traditional event, which will once again bring together popular and competitive sports in the heart of the Elbe metropolis on 13 and 14 July 2024, was awarded the World Triathlon Sustainability Certificate in Gold.

"My congratulations to the entire team behind this year’s World Triathlon Championship Series Hamburg for achieving Gold Certification in recognition of the sustainability efforts that have gone into hosting the 2024 event," said Marisol Casado, President of World Triathlon and IOC member.

"Hamburg has long been a precious partner of World Triathlon, and I am delighted that the event organisers have once again taken on these sustainability initiatives with such priority. It is so vital to our future that World Triathlon and all our partners appreciate the huge responsibility we have to the health of the planet and to reducing our events’ impact upon it. The gold standard is far from easy to attain, and every target that has been hit, from the most obvious provisions to the seemingly smallest requirement, holds equal importance," Casado continued.

Three different classifications can be achieved as part of the World Triathlon sustainability certification: Gold, Silver and Bronze. Further information is available online.

Building on the sustainability concept developed in 2023 in collaboration with the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Green Events Hamburg and the driving force HAMBURG WASSER, additional measures were added to existing points such as responsible resource management, adjustments to catering and improved procurement and waste management.

These include a survey of participants on sustainability as part of a master's thesis, the supply of certified green electricity for the event and the integration of a digital starter bag.

"As a national umbrella organisation, we are aware of our social responsibility. We are therefore proud that we have once again been recognised for our commitment to environmentally conscious practices in the implementation of sporting events," explains Oliver Schiek.

The DTU event director adds: "Last year, we set ourselves the task of ensuring that the gold certification was not a one-off. We want to make a lasting contribution to protecting the environment and at the same time create a positive experience for all athletes and spectators. We would therefore like to thank all those who have contributed to the success of this concept with their efforts, especially the driving force HAMBURG WASSER."
