Hamburg will host the 2024 World Triathlon Mixed Relay Championships

In 2024, Triathlon world championship titles will once again be up for the grabs in Hamburg. At its executive board meeting last weekend, World Triathlon awarded the 2024 Mixed Relay World Championships to Hamburg. The World Championships will be held as part of the 22nd SUZUKI World Triathlon Hamburg powered by HAMBURG WASSER.

While the individual races of the World Triathlon Championship Series will take place on Saturday, 13 July 2024, the gold, silver and bronze medals in the mixed relay will be contested one day later (Sunday, 14 July).

The best mixed relay team in the world was already being sought in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg from 2013 to 2020 and in 2023. During this period, the format not only developed into a popular spectator magnet on the Elbe metropolis' Rathausmarkt, but also became Olympic-ready.

Andy Grote, Senator for home affairs and sports of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, said: “The mixed relay saw the light of day at the World Triathlon Championships in Hamburg and developed to Olympic level. The return to its birthplace is the reward for years of good work and an honour for Hamburg as a stronghold of triathlon. We look forward to continuing the success story of this format at the 2024 World Triathlon Hamburg.”

Marisol Casado, World Triathlon President and IOC member, asdded: “I am absolutely delighted and honoured to announce that Hamburg will once again host the World Triathlon Mixed Relay Championships. This vibrant city has consistently proved to be the perfect host for this event, that will celebrate in 2024 the 10th time that is organised in Hamburg. I want to personally thank the German Federation, the City of Hamburg, the organisers, volunteers and all the staff for their commitment with this event.

We look forward to another electrifying event that celebrates the incredible athleticism and camaraderie that define the mixed relay format. Hamburg, with its fervent triathlon community, provides the ideal stage for the world's best athletes to compete and inspire. Let the excitement unfold in the heart of this city.”

DTU President Prof. Dr. Martin Engelhardt said: “We are happy that after the World Championship highlight in 2023, the best triathletes in the world will once again be competing for the World Championship title in the Mixed Relay in Hamburg next year. Bringing the World Championships back to Hamburg is not only a sign of appreciation for our association and the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg for years of good work, but also significantly enhances the weekend in Hamburg with a view to Paris 2024.

The world's biggest tri will be a much-noticed dress rehearsal for the Olympic Games a few weeks later. And numerous amateurs will also be able to take part in Hamburg. Next year, thousands of amateur athletes will once again contribute to the unique atmosphere in Hamburg in the Open Races, which has always transformed the city centre into the triathlon Mecca of the world.”
