Hamburg to host the Triathlon World Championships – World Triathlon Championship Finals in Germany in 2027

Hamburg will become the global center of triathlon in 2027: at its meeting in Australia, the Executive Board of World Triathlon officially confirmed the Hanseatic city as the host of the World Triathlon Championship Finals. In September 2027, around 4,500 athletes from all over the world are expected to take part in the 25th SUZUKI World Triathlon Hamburg presented by HAMBURG WASSER. In addition to the individual races in the Elite, Para, U23, Junior Women and Junior Men categories, as well as in the age groups over sprint and short distance and aquabike, there will also be mixed relay competitions – except for the Elite Mixed Relay competition.

Traditionally, the Championship Finals begin with the Parade of Nations on the Wednesday evening of the event week, followed by four intense days of competition. A detailed schedule will be published at a later date.

By hosting the event, Hamburg joins a list of renowned hosts – including Wollongong, which currently hosts the Grand Final on Australia's east coast, London, Abu Dhabi, Chicago, Lausanne, and Gold Coast – and once again cements its reputation as the triathlon capital.

Hamburg looks back on a long and successful triathlon history that began in 2002. In 2007, the Hanseatic city hosted the Triathlon World Championships for the first time, with participants from 72 nations and more than 600,000 spectators in attendance. This was followed in 2013 by the premiere of the Mixed Relay World Championships, which ended with a German home victory. In 2020, Hamburg was the only venue for a World Triathlon Championship Series race under coronavirus conditions and hosted a one-off World Championship. Most recently, the city hosted the Sprint and Relay World Championships in 2023 as part of the world's biggest tri. In 2026, the traditional event, including a stop on the World Championship Series and the Mixed Relay World Championships, will take place on July 11 and 12.

“World Triathlon is delighted to award the 2027 Championship Final to Hamburg,” said World Triathlon President Antonio Arimany. “We would like to thank the German Triathlon Union for their close and reliable cooperation. Hamburg is one of the most reliable partners in our race calendar and a favorite among athletes—both elite and age group. The fact that Hamburg will once again host the event is a win for the entire sport of triathlon.”

Prof. Dr. Martin Engelhardt, President of the German Triathlon Union (DTU), emphasizes: "We are honored that Hamburg has been selected as the venue for the 2027 Triathlon World Championships. This trust in our association and the city of Hamburg is recognition for years of dedicated work and successful event organization. This decision reflects the city's deep-rooted triathlon tradition and Germany's unwavering commitment to the sport. Together with our partners, we will offer athletes and interested parties from all over the world an unforgettable experience. We look forward to an electrifying atmosphere that will once again transform downtown Hamburg into the triathlon mecca of the world."

Andy Grote, Senator for the Interior and Sport of the City of Hamburg, adds: "By hosting the 2027 Triathlon World Championships, we are celebrating a quarter-century of success and adding to the emotional and sporting highlights of recent years. Nowhere else is triathlon as at home as in Hamburg, and it is an integral part of our city's DNA. With a combination of world-class competitions and thousands of amateur athletes, Hamburg will provide a stage for the sport against a unique Hamburg backdrop that will demonstrate how major international sporting events can thrill and inspire. The World Championships at Jungfernstieg and Binnenalster will thus also be a first small dress rehearsal for a possible hosting of Olympic and Paralympic competitions in the heart of our city."
