The world’s biggest tri continues its success story in the heart of Hamburg
On the weekend of July 15-16, 2017 the city of Hamburg will host the 16th Hamburg Wasser World Triathlon. Up to 300,000 spectators and fans and more than 10,000 triathletes are expected to show up for this eagerly anticipated event with online entries opening on Thursday, 27th October at noon.
Starting and finishing in the heart of Hamburg, this unique event offers a variety of competitions that cater to athletes of all ages and skill levels: the Sprint Distance (0.5km swim/22km bike/5km run), the Olympic Distance (1.5km swim/40km bike/10km run), and the relay races across both distances. Its spectacular setting and highlight-packed course leads the athletes through the city centre along iconic landmarks such as the Alster, Jungfernstieg, Elbchaussee, and Rathausmarkt make it a ‘must-do’ sporting event on the German triathlon calendar.
Hamburg Wasser World Triathlon is renowned for its first-timer friendly atmosphere. With an athlete field that consists of approximately 40% rookies each year, the World’s Biggest Tri is the ideal event to bring new athletes into the sport. It is also the best short course warm-up event to get ready for the IRONMAN® Hamburg event, which makes its premier this year.
The ITU World Triathlon Series will once again showcase nine first-class triathlon events, starting off in Abu Dhabi, followed by Gold Coast, Yokohama, Leeds, Hamburg, Edmonton, Montreal, Stockholm and finally culminating with the World Triathlon Grand Final in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The Hamburg Wasser World Triathlon will also feature the world’s best triathletes, with the likes of Olympic medallists Gwen Jorgensen and the British Brownlee brothers having competed in Hamburg on several occasions previously. The event is again expected to attract an impressive list of international triathletes for both the elite races, as well as the ITU Mixed Relay Triathlon World Championships.
Further developments on the course will be announced over the coming weeks.
