As of 2009, the World Champions are no longer selected in a single event, but through a points system within the "World Triathlon Championship Series". The worlds best triathletes compete in eight single events which take place in famous cities across the globe, for the titel of becoming World Champion.
After the premier event in Montreal this year, Hamburg will host the newly World Triathlon Sprint & Relay World Championships in 2023. Elite and Junior athletes from around the world will try to grab the World Championship crown in the following race formats:
- Elite - Super Sprint Race Men & Women (0,3 km (1 lap) - 7,5 km (3 laps) - 1,75 km (2 laps)
- Elite - Mixed Relay 4x (0,3 km (1 lap) - 7,0 km (2 laps) - 1,75 km (2 laps)
- Juniors – Sprint Distance Men & Women (0,75 km (1 lap) - 21 km (6 laps) - 5 km (2 laps)
- Juniors/U23 - Mixed Relay 4x (0,3 km (1 lap) - 7,0 km (2 laps) - 1,75 km (2 laps)
