Hamburg on a Triathlon-High - Australia wins Mixed Relay WC

After the Sprint-Distance on Saturday, the Olympic-Distance followed in Hamburg – Australia wins Mixed Relay World Championship

The second event day of the Hamburg Wasser World Triathlon was shining with top elite triathlon sport. Even though the weather was typically hanseatic –  this triathlon weekend was a great success and showed why Hamburg is called the “Active City”.

The day started with the swim in the Alster at 6.30am this morning for the age group on the Olympic distance. After the 1.5k swim – the athletes went on the cycling course for another 40k through the old city, St. Pauli and Ottensen. The last 10k had to be run by the 5000 age group athletes.

The highlight of the day, right after the age groups, was the Mixed Team World Championship with nearly 150.000 spectators along the course. The spectators in the arena were able to watch a thrilling finale. The American team was leading after the first three Supersprints-triathlons of the race but Jacob Birtwhistle overtook the American on the last Supersprint-Triathlon for the Australian Team. Birtwhistle secured the win with an end time of 01:22:38 and led the Australian team to their first Mixed Team World Championship title.  

The German Team achieved the 10th place today with Anna Knapp, Laura Lindemann, Moritz Horn and Lasse Nygaard-Priester.

The entire weekend was a great success

A very successful triathlon-weekend is coming to an end after a spectacular finale of the Mixed Team World Championship. Over 10.500 athletes took the challenge of the Hamburg Wasser World Triathlon in the Sprint-Distance on Saturday or the Olympic-Distance on Sunday.

Head of Operations Oliver Schiek takes a positive résumé. ‘This was a great triathlon-weekend. I can only raise one’s hat to all the hard working age grouper. It was a pleasure for me and my team to host this event for all age group athletes and the world class elite. Additionally I would like to thank our sponsors, the host city Hamburg and all volunteers for their support. Another thank you must go to our spectators and the amazing atmosphere.’
